An act of both terrorism and a hate crime
Orlando, Florida (CNN) Fifty people were killed inside Pulse, a gay nightclub, Orlando Police Chief John Mina and other officials said Sunday morning, just hours after a shooter opened fire in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
As I read the account of this horrific hate crime in the news this morning, I am filled with anger toward so many people. I am distraught with grief that so many lives were snuffed out simply because of who they are. I am furious that so many people are now actively blaming the victims for the violence perpetrated against them. I am disgusted by the level of hatred and bigotry toward the LGBT community that is being blatantly foisted upon us by those who support legislation that discriminates against the LGBT community, and fosters further violence against them.
It has become obvious just by virtue of the news reports that the violence toward the gay community is escalating. The religious right and those conservatives who are anti-gay are to blame for all fifty of these deaths that occurred today, and for the murder and other violent crimes against homosexuals that number in the dozens here in the US every day.
To the religious right and their supporters regarding the gay community:
I blame you for inciting this violence by your rhetoric, actions, and commentary regarding the gay community, including the fiasco that has borne all of the ‘bathroom bills’ that have resulted in an increase in this violence.
I blame you for teaching that your version of God hates homosexuals, that they are deserving of everything from shunning to their literal extinction. If this is what you believe your God teaches, then your God is of absolutely no use to me.
I blame you for teaching that these members of our society are undeserving of the same rights and privileges accorded to them by virtue of our constitution and bill of rights.
I blame you for every spit spat, punch thrown, epithet hurled, shot fired, blow swung, etc.
You, the bigots of the world, have the blood of these fifty and the countless tens of thousands of others who have been discriminated against, fired, evicted, beaten, and murdered because of who and what they are. I have no love in my heart for you, and I am done pulling punches. You are no different than those who beat and lynched black people, and no different than those who gassed the Jewish people.
Homosexuals deserve unreserved participation in all aspects of American life. Anything less is unacceptable.
As I posted this morning on my Facebook Page:
“If you are not a supporter of the LGBT community, get the fuck off my friends list. I don’t want anything to do with you. Don’t contact me, call me, text me, or come to my home. You are not welcome in my life. You are dead to me.”
