There are FAQs, then there are FAQs for women...
So, the NFL has a new policy in place this year regarding what can and cannot be carried into stadiums under the guise of maintaining security and faster access to the games. I don’t necessarily have a problem with this, for a couple reasons.
While a few things eventually caught my eye, the first one was the types of purses that fans are prohibited from taking inside a stadium. When I began reading the article, I was kinda nonplussed about the requirement for purses to be of the transparent variety.
Measures like this have been commonplace in many areas for a lot of years. I have memories of driving my mother to work thirty years ago and her carrying a transparent ‘purse’ for security reasons.
Granted, the NFL could have done a better job of letting fans know about this, as there have been a rash of complaints from people showing up for events, and having to wait on incredibly long lines to both check in and check out their bags.
Granted, the NFL did state they would have an ample supply of clear tote-style bags for fans who arrive with improper bags. However, I was unable to find out if these would be distributed at no cost, or if fans would be subject to the usual highway robbery prices that they’ve been accustomed to paying for anything distributed by a sports franchise.
As I read on, I came across the FAQ section. This is where I found some problems.
As well, they are under the assumption that men don’t carry purses. I carry a purse, as do many men. Of course, most of them seem to have insecurities regarding their manhood and feel the need to attach any one of several other names for their purses. Shoulder bag, courier bag, case, satchel, etc. It’s a purse, guys. Call it what it is and move on.
Finally, it would also appear that the NFL thinks only women would be in possession or operation of medical equipment. As a disabled person, this one kind of irritated me more than the purse or baby thing.
Just The FAQs…
Regarding these new security policies, the NFL has provided a handy FAQ page for those seeking more information. Great. I love FAQ pages. They are awesome. Totes and all that.
However, there is a separate FAQ that the NFL has designated as ‘Just for Women.’
Under this FAQ section are the questions:
“Are All Purses Prohibited?”
“What About Diaper Bags?”
“If I have special medical equipment I need to have with me at all times, where do I put that?
Now, before the ladies get their feathers ruffled, the fact that there is a separate FAQ for women is obviously a problem, as all of the questions in the FAQs could have been address under one banner. However, this has been covered across several blogs and news outlets already. No point in adding to the obvious.
But I Digress…
At the time I wrote this, the NFL has chosen to make no changes on it’s purse policy page. But, just in case, here is a handy screenshot:
Oh, and yes, I did file this under ‘Religion’ for obvious reasons
