Honor Killings: Islamic And Christian Misogyny At It’s Worst

“Man enjoys the great advantage of having a god endorse the code he writes; and since man exercises a sovereign authority over women it is especially fortunate that this authority has been vested in him by the Supreme Being. For the Jews, Mohammedans and Christians among others, man is master by divine right; the fear of God will therefore repress any impulse towards revolt in the downtrodden female.” – Simone de Beauvoir – The Second Sex 1949

An “Honor Killing” is nothing more than a vicious, pre-meditated murder committed by a sick, twisted, demented and psychotic fundamental religionist. The victim is usually female and the perpetrator is usually male. The charge brought against the victim is bringing dishonor to the family. How is this dishonor wrought? Sometimes it is a violation of a dress code or refusing to marry a pre-arranged spouse, but the most common reasons surround sexual activity.

Of course, the sexual activity doesn’t have to be consensual. Rape victims are also guilty of bringing dishonor, and they can be killed as well. While records of honor killings date back thousands of years, the advancement of the collective human intelligence and worldwide recognition of basic human rights should have eradicated this doctrinal ritual long, long ago. However, fundamental religionists have a tendency to ignore things like human rights, preferring to remain locked in willful ignorance.

Honor Killings And The Muslim Man…

To quote Syed Kamran Mirza:

Honor killing is the bone chilling horrific cruelty committed by the family members—father, mother, brothers, brother-in-laws, even in some cases own sisters also. In this terrible episode the victim is always the daughter/sister or other blood related young women who get killed. Perpetrators are always the family members stated above. Family honor is one of the core values of Arab society. Anything from speaking with an unrelated man, to rumored pre-marital loss of virginity, to an extra-marital affair, refuses forced marriages; marry according to their will; or even women and girls who have been raped—can stain or destroy the family honor. Therefore, family members (parents, brothers, or sisters) kill the victim in order to remove the stain or maintain, and protect the honor of the family. Killers are given light sentences, sometimes with little or no jail time at all. The killers mainly defend their act of murder by referring to the Koran and Islam. Family guardian will say that they are merely following the directives set down in their Islamic ethical beliefs

Honor killings occur with shocking regularity in Middle Eastern and South Asian Muslim nations. Those who try to defend Islam often blame the widespread murder of innocent women on tribal or cultural practices, stating that Islam in of itself is not responsible for it. However, the honor killing within the Muslim community originate from the core value of family honor that is prevalent in Islamic societies. As was stated by Mr. Mirza, all it can take to spark an honor killing is speaking with a man or a rumor of the loss of virginity.

According to most Islamic traditions, a woman is property, owned by a man who is responsible for her behavior and even if she is raped she becomes the source of shame to her family. Spoiled. Damaged goods. The shame on the family can only be removed by cleansing the stain with blood, and thus, according to Islam, she must be killed. The outright misogyny of Islam is horrific in its subjugation and oppression of women, who are considered less than second class citizen.

According to the Quran, women have half the rights of men and are considered less intelligent. In fact, their “prophet,” Mohammad, referred to women as “awrah,” which can be translated as “object of shame” due to the literal definition being “pudendum,” which are the external genitals of a woman. The root of the word “pudendum” is from the Latin “pudor,” which means “a sense of shame.” In fact, the word “Puta” (another derivative) means “whore” or “bitch” in portuguese, spanish, and Filipino. This is how the Muslim man can justify a women becoming the object of shame for the “crime” of being raped.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of women are murdered by their families each year in the name of family “honor.” A recent survey showed that 91 percent of honor killings worldwide are committed by Muslims, and 84 percent of honor killings in the United States were done by Muslims. Honor killings are not honorable at all, but the result of a religion that has become a cancerous tumor on the body of humanity and like a cancer, Islam seeks to destroy everything except itself and if it finds within itself anything that stunts the propagation of it’s percieved “purity,” it will destroy that, as well. Hence, honor killings.

The sight of Muslims wearing sandwich boards that suggest the beheading of anyone who states that Islam is not a religion of peace speaks for itself. I realize that Christopher Hitchens statement that “religion poisons everything” was mainly directed at Christianity (which is true), but it is equally true for Islam.

Honor Killing And The Christian Man…

There seems to be a divide on whether or not murder committed by Christians of those who have dishonored or disrespected the perpetrator.  Many Christians would argue that the bible does not support this practice. They will tell you that modern Christianity does not condone the taking of a life for transgressions that result in dishonor or disrespect.

However, I would be remiss if I did not address the the hypocritical finger-pointing that is routine among many Christians who condemn Islam for being barbaric in it’s support for this kind of violence.  The Quran has not cornered the market on honor killings. Commands for honor killing can be found in the Bible, as well:

And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.” – Leviticus 21:9

“If however the charge is true and no proof of the girl’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death…” Deuteronomy 22:13-21.

Yeah, but that’s the Old Testament, right?  Well, consider this:

“Do not think that I [Jesus] have come to abolish the Law (the Old Testament) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law (the Old Testament) until everything is accomplished.”  (Matthew 5:17-18)

“For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head;” 1 Corinthians 11:9, 10.

There exist many similar warnings, condemnations and death sentences within the pages of Christian Scripture.  These that I have referred are only a few examples, and it behooves me how any Christian can have a theological problem with Islamic honor killings when the bible allows them. This is because you don’t see Christian husbands and fathers going about lopping off heads.

However, one cannot deny the prevalence of abuse against disobedient children that have resulted in their murder, nor the abuse that results in the murders of insufficiently compliant wives. The perpetrators of these heinous crimes have acted out in response to a perceived disrespectful transgression against their honor as godly parents and husbands.  They believe that their wives and daughters need to be “taught a lesson,” and most of the perpetrators use biblical Scripture to back up their abuse.

I will give Christianity this; their wanton murder of innocent people for crimes of blasphemy has almost disappeared in the time following the Crusades. However, as I stated, a “True Christian” cannot point their fingers of disapproval at Islamic honor killings when their own bible has almost identical commands.

Abusive Muslims, Abusive Christians…

What it comes down to is that many Christians and Muslims use their twisted beliefs to justify their abusive behavior toward the women in their lives.  Purists may disagree with me that deaths resulting from the physical abuse of Christian wives and daughters are not true honor killings.  However, a close examination of death sentences that God/Allah command to be meted out for sexually related transgressions reveal quite the opposite.

The Muslim and Christian men who beat and/or kill their wives and daughters are not just dangerous, but also ignorant, uneducated, hate-filled, narrow-minded,  bigoted, intolerant, self-righteous, dishonest, egocentric, arrogant and cruel. They are totally pre-occupied with sex to the point of producing sexual misery, have exceedingly narrow and legalistic views on morality, sanction slavery, and are the lowest form of human life on the planet.

They have been brainwashed into believing that committing some of the most horrific acts of inhumanity toward women are the want, will and desire their sick, twisted, perverted, megalomaniac deities, and that includes Yahweh, Allah, Jesus and especially the pedophile Prophet of Islam, Muhammad.

The New Testament also forbids women to speak in church…

Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

    1 Cor. 14:34
Paul, the self proclaimed “Apostle” wrote that.

Paul is almost certainly innocent of that specific quote – it shows all the characteristics of a later scribal interpolation, notably appearing in different places in different ancient manuscripts.

broad statement Andrew,on what evidence do you base your “dismissal”?

Yet, most Muslims and Christians each claim that their religion is one of peace and love. With love like that, why do they need to claim there are devils?

For the variety of being tortured by someone who actually admits they hate you rather than claiming they love you?

I’m surprised you don’t mention Hindus who also practice honour killing quite regularly. At least, firefox couldn’t find the word Hindu on a search of the page.
I’m sorry but I didn’t read your whole article…that brick background makes it almost impossible to see. I strongly recommend you change it to a plain background.

    • October 19, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Must have been a page loading error…now the background is white and I’ve read it. Still no Hindus mentioned though.

My 18 year old daughter plays rugby and has taken boxing lessons…I pity any religious nutbag that tries to subjugate her.

Well, you are closer than most atheist exegetes. At least you recognize that “the Law” refers to the Old Testament, not the actual Mosaic law. But “the Prophets” also refers to the OT–obviously the books of the prophets. The Law or the Prophets (or and the Prophets) is how Jesus would have referred to the Old Testament.

Still, given the way you unleashed this text I think you are attempting to use it inappropriately–that the Mosaic law still stands. The clue that this passage is not teaching that is in the verb fulfill. That is not what you do with laws–you obey or disobey laws. What you fulfill are prophesies. A paraphrase of this passage is:

I am not some new unforeseen god that renders the Old Testament obsolete or meaningless. On the contrary, I have come to fulfill its prophecies*. All of them.

As for the Mosiac law, it was for a nation that no longer exists. Jesus changed everything–a phase transition. An old covenant was replaced by a new (and better) covenant. An old priesthood (Aaron’s) was replaced by a new (and better) priest (Jesus). And the old law (Mosaic) was replaced by a new (and better) law (the Sermon on the Mount.) For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. (Heb 7:12)

*The same thing he claimed at the start if his public ministry in the synagogue.

(Puts on theology minor hat) Heddle might also have invoked the “Pericope Adulterae” in the gospel according to John, in which Jesus chases away the mob who are about to perform an honor-killing. Yes, the story may be a later addition, but the Holy Ghost would not have permitted the Church to take it as authentic unless its omission from some mss.–perhaps even the original–was due to scribal error. (Theology minor hat removed.)

IIRC the word “pudendum” (pl. pudenda), at least in classical Latin, refers to the sex organs of either gender. My copy of the OLD is on another floor of my house but I’ll check in a moment.

      Heddle, uh

      [citationS needed]

Also, your definition of “Laws and/or Prophets” is in the form of a customary interpretation for convenience, not what any impartial person would derive from a dictionary and a little contemplation. If your interpretation is correct, and if the bible is the ‘inerrant word of god’ then why oh why did Jesus even include the word ‘Law’?

BTW, if it’s just a storybook of magic, why does it really matter? After all, people get into red-faced argument about everything from Shakespeare to Mark Twain to Dr. Who and Hitchhiker’s Guide, but nobody claims the Universe is ruled by who is the victor.

        Doug Hayden, uh,

Also, your definition of “Laws and/or Prophets” is in the form of a customary interpretation for convenience, not what any impartial person would derive from a dictionary and a little contemplation. If your interpretation is correct, and if the bible is the ‘inerrant word of god’ then why oh why did Jesus even include the word ‘Law’?

How is this not clear? He included the word Law because that (Law) was the name used to refer to the Pentateuch.

What a person would derive from the dictionary is not very relevant. This is an ancient text. You have to know what was meant by “the Law and/or the Prophets” in first century Palestine, not 21st century dictionary.com.

It is always easy to say something is a definition of convenience. It is somewhat more difficult to back it up. In this case you cannot–the Law referring part of the OT (and the Prophets referring to another part) is on firm foundation. Try again.

You forgot the Mormons mate….I know there is a hilarious bitchfight in the US between Fundys and Mormons at the moment, but honour killing still goes on within the wingnut fringe of the Mormons.

As I come from the UK, where we are unfettered by constitutionally supported hate speech rights, we dont have books on how to beat children according to Biblcal guidelines. Such a book in the UK would find it hard to even get published, have little or no audience, and its authors would potentally be prosecuted for faclitating child abuse. They would also find themselves social pariahs hounded into some distant backwater by their own neighbours. Then again we also dont have the Westboro lot, and people who burn korans to encourage hate get put in court.

Im no massive fan of the country of my birth, but Id rather have our system of modern evolving laws, includng hate crime laws that restrict “free” speech, than a system dependant on a 250 year old contract written by men whose good intents have been forgotten, and a massively abused right to free speech that serves to protect bigots, haters, child abusers and snake oil salesmen of all stripes.

„Als die Polizei die Bigotten holte, habe ich geschwiegen; ich war ja kein Bigott,” usw. You fill in the rest of the parody (and I apologize to Martin Niemoeller). The legislative history of the omnicompetent English Parliament in preserving freedom of thought, like the corresponding constitutional history of the USA, is most charitably described as checkered. Most USAmericans would still prefer an unofficial thought police (Joseph McCarthy is a living memory to me), and freethinkers (that is what these blogs are about, or?) need official ones least of all.

Ben Franklin said it best, and should be quoted to each new generation:

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

Honor Killings that I have seen are also used as a cover for less “honorable” murder reasons.

We once had a blood covered kid run to a base, her mother slaughtered. The accused said it was a honor killing, the husband asserted that the accused wanted his land and was did it to run off the husband’s family.

We found the husband dead a week after the accused was released for “justified murder”. He then moved in on the dead family’s land…

“Man enjoys the great advantage of having a god endorse the code he writes”

I understand there is a perl library that does that.

But seriously, yes, it’s all there in the OT. Whether a certain religious sect (some for of Islam or Christianity or Judaism) happens to be engaged in the process at the moment, or admits to it vs. not, is mere historical process.

Bullies thrive on cruelty and hide in the shadows of injustice then shrink and wither when exposed. There is no honour in murder and this power crazed obsession is in other religions as well. I nearly lost a friend and it inspired me to write a book.
