Sex: Prudish People Perpetrating Preposterous Policies

Sex.  It is what it is for each of us, according to how we like it and how we are internally oriented.   Our sexuality, along with what drives us sexually, belongs to each of us, individually. Sexual predators or pedophiles notwithstanding, our sexuality is nobody’s business.   Those who just can’t keep their noses out of another persons sexuality with respect to their opinions on what is acceptable in another individuals sex life really need to butt out, if you will pardon a rather sublime pun.  The problem is, the prudish people perpetrating preposterous policies on sex is an attempt to legislate morality, which has been proven over and over again to cause a plethora of problems.

Religionists are, by far, the most invasive group of people when it comes to sex.  Contrary to what they would have you believe, they are obsessed with sex.  They think about sex all the time.  It “pops up” in their minds at every turn. Blogs, forums and social networking sites are chock full of posts about the bane of sexual freedom being promoted in every area of life.  Boycotts are being demanded by the truckload against anything that is even remotely suggestive.  Don’t shop here, don’t view that, don’t visit there, don’t buy this, don’t associate with those people, don’t wear this, don’t say that and don’t ever touch yourself…  The amount of time and energy that is expended by the religious right is only countered by the immense amount of laughter generated by unbelievers every time one of these bone-headed anti-sex advocates gets caught with their dick inside someone that they have been publicly thrashing. How many anti-gay pastors have been caught in a homosexual tryst this year?  How many priests have been busted diddling little boys?  How many Christian music celebrities came out of the closet?   And then there are the “Ministries” dedicated to “reparative therapy”, which is an attempt to “cure” homosexuality, sometimes by such draconian methods as exorcism.

They rail about homosexuality the most, totally ignoring the scientific fact that homosexuality is both naturally occurring and highly essential in the lives of a number of species, aside from those species which are asexual, in which case, homosexuality is not a factor.  For the past few decades, mental health practitioners have recognized that homosexuality is not a mental illness, but this doesn’t stop the religionists from their hate-mongering statements that homosexuality is a disease and they continue their efforts to legislate the sexual activities of American Citizens in their private lives.  The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists and the National Association of Social Workers have all deemed homosexuality as normal sexual behavior for those who are so oriented.  But, once again, the religionists totally ignore and deny the science and the fact that these groups rejected all homosexual reparative therapy as not only ineffective, but potentially destructive.  The risks include depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior.  As well, the Kinsey Institute provides very compelling data that there are very few people who are one-hundred-percent heterosexual or homosexual.  The Kinsey Scale puts most of us somewhere other than exclusively one or the other.

And it is not only homosexuality that is the vitriolic target of the narrow-minded and sexually repressed religionists.  Other forms of sexual expression are on the chopping block as well, including masturbation (probably the only activity that is engaged by almost every single human being on the planet but a vast majority claim that they never do it), oral sex, spanking, bondage, dominance and submission, anal sex, group sex, voyeurism, pornography, burlesque, transvestism, gender modification and just about everything other than the good ‘ol “man-on-top-get-it-over-with-quick” missionary position between one man and one woman.  I won’t even discuss prostitution here, aside from my point of view that it should be legal and regulated in all fifty states.  Props to Reno…

Sexual orientation emerges for most people in early adolescence without any prior sexual experience. For most people, it is not a conscious choice that can be voluntarily changed.  Whether heterosexually or homosexually oriented, the resulting preferences for any one of the wide variety of human sexual activities develops early on.  We like what we like and we know what turns us on.  Pedophilia and rape are not sexual preferences, by the way.  They are acts of violence with a desire to control another human being against their will, which actually puts these crimes closer to the religionists view of sexuality than that of the sexually expressive individual.   The constant pounding that “kinky”, “fetish” and just about all the other variant sexual practices get as being evil, abominable, despicable, dirty, sinful, sick, twisted and unacceptable by the religious right serves no other purpose but the attempted projection of the prudish beliefs onto another individual and causes severe mental stress, sexual suppression and in many cases, feelings of shame on the part of the person who happens to like a little variety in their pursuit of an orgasm.

The propaganda that comes out of churches and mosques about the character of those who engage in alternate sexual pleasure is comedic and tragic at the same time.  Ridiculous and audacious beliefs that these wingnuts hold about gay men having more of a tendency than heterosexual men to sexually molest children has prevented the adoption of many children who would benefit by having a permanent home, loving parents and provision for the rest of their lives instead of being left in the failing, overcrowded and understaffed foster care system.  But they are only thinking of the children, right?   The rhetorical vomit being spewed forth from pulpits all across the land that rails against human sexuality is pitiful, trite, largely hypocritical and is not representative of the inner-most needs, wants and desires of the human species.  There is no need to change someone’s sexual preferences as long as they are not illegal with respect to minors and unwanted advances.  What consenting adults do for sexual pleasure is between them and no amount of legislation is going to change that.  You’ve heard the term “life finds a way”, right?  Well, so does sex.  Always has, always will, no matter how hard the religious right tries to inflict guilt and despair.

It’s bad enough that there exist penalties that result in the arrest and often the incarceration for offenses that are categorized as “crimes against nature”.  Those who support such egregious penalties for sexual activities such as honor killings, genital mutilation and other horrendous punishments should be publicly humiliated.  Those who engage in these practices should be dealt with in extreme prejudice.

Our individual sexuality is how we experience the erotic and express ourselves as sexual beings.  It is driven by our desire for pleasure, which seems to be at the bottom of the list of “good things” espoused by the church.  The fact is that each of us determine what we find attractive, and this varies widely from individual to individual.  While legislation is needed to protect individuals from sexually invasive criminal acts, it is not needed to regulate what consenting adults do for sexual pleasure.

Sexuality, as we each know, is personal and because of our preferences and the stimuli that turn us on (and turn us off as well) is shared with someone else. It is usually a pleasant intercourse or not-it is to some degree usually within some limits of compromise to further the possibility of subsequent encounters. But after a while, we tend to assume ownership of our partners sexuality as well and thus we tend to want to become possessive of your partner’s sexuality.
